Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Likely to Launch on August 15; PMRDA Awaits State Nod
The long-awaited Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor is poised to begin the passenger operations as early as August 15 as the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is awaiting final for approval from the Maharashtra government.
Officials familiar with the project said PMRDA has forwarded a proposal to the state government after the corridor has received the mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). As the inauguration date has not been officially announced, Independence Day is being considered as the expected launch date for the first operational stretch.
The initial phase of Metro Line 3 will connect Maan and Balewadi and offer commuters their first access to the new corridor. The remaining section from Baner High Street to Shivajinagar will be opened in a subsequent phase after pending construction work is completed and the necessary statutory approvals are secured.
The CMRS has conducted an extensive inspection of the corridor between July 5 and July 8 by reviewing the infrastructure, safety systems and operational preparedness in the presence of senior officials from Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), the concessionaire implementing the project. After addressing the observations that were raised during the inspection, the company had submitted a compliance report after which the safety regulator had granted clearance for operations.
The approved section has been authorised to operate at a maximum speed of 80 kmph using the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) that signals system with Automatic Train Protection (ATP). The double-track corridor will run on a 750V DC third-rail traction system which is designed to support automated and efficient metro operations.
Once operational, the corridor will prominently control travel between Pune‘s largest IT hub and the city which will benefit thousands of daily commuters and IT professionals who are currently depend on congested road networks.
Although the anticipation is high, authorities have clarified that the final inauguration schedule will be announced only after the state government grants a formal approval. Until then, August 15 remains the most likely, but unconfirmed, date for the launch of passenger services.
