When ‘GDN’ actor R Madhavan spoke about his admiration for Kamal Haasan: “I’d be happy if I achieve even a fraction of what he has”
R Madhavan is currently in the spotlight for his performance in ‘GDN’, the biographical drama directed by KrishnakumarRamakumar. The film is based on the life of inventor and industrial pioneer GopalswamyDoraiswamy Naidu, popularly known as the “Edison of India.
“ R. Madhavan, who had shared screenspace with Kamal Haasan for the film ‘AnbeSivam’, had once opened up about his admiration for the legendary actor.
On a possible Kamal-Rajinikanth film
Madhavan , in an earlier chat with Bollywood Hungama, shared his thoughts on the possibility of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth appearing together in a film. He pointed to the enormous popularity of both stars and the passionate following surrounding them. He said, “if Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth are cast together it would be quite disastrous.
The two actors’ iconic images are so strong their fan clubs would battle it out to the finish line. You know when Rajnikanth’s fan club felt A.R. Rahman had given better music in a Kamal Haasan starrer it was up in arms against Rahman . They wanted to break his car. In a film Ramya Krishnan playfully put her leg in Rajni’s face. She had to be given special protection for months for disrespecting an icon.”
Working with Kamal Haasan in ‘AnbeSivam’
R. Madhavan and Kamal Haasan shared the screen in AnbeSivam’, directed by Sundar C.
Looking back at the experience, Madhavan admitted that he was uncertain about how he would match up with an actor he deeply admired. He said, “I can’t ever hope to be anywhere near him in terms of acting potential, screen presence, dancing abilities or comic timing. When we worked together in AnbeSivam, it was an experience that defied description. I didn’t know how I’d behave with him or whether I could match his standards.
But it was wonderful how he took me under his wings.”
R. Madhavan recalls a guru-shishya equation
The actor further described Kamal Haasan as one of the most dedicated performers he has encountered. He also recalled how the veteran actor shared his interpretations of scenes without making Madhavan feel uncomfortable about their difference in experience. He said, “Mr Kamal Haasan is the most dedicated actor I’ve come across. Though I’m far less experienced and talented, he never got patronizing. While doing AnbeSivam Mr Kamal Haasan and I represented the purest form of the guru-shishyaparampara. He gave his interpretations of scenes. And most of the time he was right.” For Madhavan, the collaboration was therefore more than a screen pairing. It became an opportunity to observe and learn from an actor he held in high regard.
‘GDN’ actor wants to follow Kamal Haasan’s path
R. Madhavan also spoke about Kamal Haasan’s ability to take risks with his film choices.
He pointed out that the actor’s projects often carry his distinct identity, regardless of their eventual reception. He said, “Understandably, he gets all the flak when one of his starrers doesn’t do well and all the praise if it does... And why not? A Kamal Haasan film will always be a Kamal Haasan film. I’d like to do the kind of roles that Mr Kamal Haasan does. Daringly different and always the unexpected. I hold him in the greatest esteem. I’d be happy if I achieve even a fraction of what he has.”
Meanwhile, Madhavan’s ‘GDN’ is now in theatres. The film brings the story of G.D. Naidu to audiences and features Madhavan in the lead role. KrishnakumarRamakumar has directed the project, and the first reviews are positive.
