French proverb of the day: ‘If youth but knew, if old age but could’ – a lesson on wisdom and the timing of life
Have you ever looked back at a decision and thought, “If only I had known then what I know now?” Or watched an older person wish they still had the energy to chase a dream they once postponed?
Life has a way of teaching lessons at the wrong time. Wisdom often comes after mistakes, while youth often has the strength but not the experience to avoid them. There is a timeless French saying that captures this irony in just a few words.
French proverb of the day: ‘If youth but knew, if old age but could.’
What this proverb means
The French proverb “Si jeunessesavait, sivieillessepouvait” literally translates to “If youth but knew, if old age but could.” On the surface, it contrasts two stages of life. Young people often have energy, time and opportunities but may lack the experience to make the best choices. Older people, on the other hand, have gained wisdom through life but may no longer have the same physical strength, health or time to act on everything they have learned.
The deeper message is that life rarely gives us perfect timing. Experience often comes after challenges, and by the time we fully understand many of life’s lessons, some opportunities have already passed. The proverb encourages people to value both youthful enthusiasm and the wisdom that comes with age.
Significance of the proverb in real life
This saying applies to many aspects of everyday life. A young professional may ignore good career advice only to appreciate it years later. Someone may delay spending time with loved ones, only to realize much later how precious those moments were. Likewise, older people often encourage younger generations to take chances, learn continuously and make the most of their time while they can.
The proverb also reminds us that different generations have something valuable to offer each other. Young people bring fresh ideas, ambition and energy, while older people contribute experience, perspective and judgment. When both listen to each other, better decisions are often made.
The takeaway is simple: learn from those who have walked the path before you, and make the most of the opportunities you have today. Wisdom and ability rarely arrive at the same time, but paying attention to both can help us live with fewer regrets.
