Icelandic proverb of the day: 'It is difficult to steal when the boss is a thief' - A timeless lesson on leadership
Have you ever wondered why some workplaces, organisations or even entire societies struggle to build trust? The answer often has less to do with rules and more to do with the people leading them. Across cultures, many old proverbs explain this idea in just a few words, and one traditional Icelandic saying does exactly that. Though centuries old, its message feels surprisingly relevant today, especially at a time when conversations around ethics, accountability and leadership are more important than ever.
The proverb of the day is: 'It is difficult to steal when the boss is a thief'
This traditional Icelandic proverb uses a striking image to explain how dishonesty at the top influences everything beneath it. At first glance, the saying may sound humorous or ironic, but it carries a serious message about corruption, leadership and human behaviour.
What does the proverb mean?
The proverb suggests that it is extremely difficult to deceive, cheat or steal from someone who is already dishonest. A thief understands how theft works because they are familiar with every trick, shortcut and hiding place. As a result, such a person is naturally suspicious of others and is quick to recognise the same behaviour in someone else.
In this sense, the proverb points out an interesting irony. A corrupt leader may not trust anyone because they expect others to behave the same way they do. Their own actions shape how they view the people around them, creating an atmosphere filled with doubt and suspicion.
The saying also carries a much broader message. It explains that when dishonesty begins at the top, it slowly becomes part of the entire system. Employees, followers or members of a group may begin to believe that dishonesty is acceptable because they see those in authority behaving that way. Once corruption becomes normal, trying to outsmart the system from within becomes almost impossible because those in charge already know every dishonest tactic.
Why leadership matters
The Icelandic proverb shares a similar lesson with another well-known saying: "A fish rots from the head down." Both proverbs emphasise that the behaviour of leaders shapes the culture of an organisation, business, government or community.
When leaders fail to act with honesty, responsibility or fairness, those problems rarely remain limited to the top. Instead, their actions influence everyone below them. Employees often take cues from their managers, citizens watch the conduct of public officials, and children learn from the adults around them. Leadership, therefore, is about much more than making decisions. It is about setting the standard that others are likely to follow.
If a leader cuts corners, ignores rules or behaves selfishly, the people around them may begin to think that integrity no longer matters. Over time, this weakens trust, encourages unethical behaviour and creates an unhealthy environment where suspicion replaces cooperation.
On the other hand, leaders who act honestly encourage those around them to do the same. When fairness, transparency and accountability become everyday habits at the top, they are more likely to spread throughout the entire organisation.
Why this proverb still matters today
Although this Icelandic proverb comes from a different era, its message remains remarkably relevant in today's world. Whether in business, politics, education or everyday life, people often judge an organisation by the conduct of those leading it.
The proverb reminds us that leadership is not simply about authority or giving instructions. Every decision, action and example set by a leader influences the people around them. Trust grows when leaders practise the same values they expect from everyone else.
It also encourages individuals to think carefully about the environments they create. Honesty cannot thrive where dishonesty is rewarded, and integrity becomes difficult to maintain when corruption is treated as normal.
Perhaps the greatest lesson hidden within this traditional Icelandic saying is that culture begins at the top.
